The Benefits of Hiring a Lighting Designer
Often, the most overlooked process in the design of a new home is the lighting design. Well planned and executed lighting design is seen by some builders as a luxury “add-on” appropriate only for the most expensive projects. But, in fact, lighting is critically important to the design of any home. Lighting sets a tone and dictates a mood. A “well-dressed” home is never truly complete until a comprehensive lighting plan of the interior and exterior is put into place. Over and above the utilitarian functions of a lighting design, proper lighting design can be reflective of the personal taste and interests of the homeowner as their choice in furnishing and art. Presenting a bold statement with an accent light, or the subtle nuance of cove lighting in the master bedroom, the “crafting” of the interior spaces with light is as fundamental to the overall finished look of the house as the stone and wood that goes into the construction.

Unfortunately, a significant percentage of the time, lighting design is an afterthought. Once the walls and ceilings are installed, it becomes prohibitively expensive to implement significant lighting. Accordingly, the best time to think about lighting is during the early design phases of your project. When you or your interior designer, review a set of architectural plans, the primary consideration is the function of each room as planned with your architect. Once the architect has a working floorplan, the interior designer places furniture and fixtures and coordinates the cabinet design. When that step is completed, the lighting designer begins the placement of the lights. Our award winning designers will typically meet with you to determine your lifestyle and preferences and to show you the latest options in lighting. Our designers will coordinate with the other design professionals involved in your project (the interior designer, the landscape architect, the cabinet designer, and the general contractor) to create and implement a lighting design that will be unique to you and your environment.
